Another target to investigate...
Students may wish to expand their data collection and use a second target, constructed according to the instructions below. Results using this target are also being shared in the national data collection.
'Target 2' specifications:
As for Target 1, but with these modifications:
- Set of concentric circles divided in half along a line parallel to the long sides of the rectangle;
- Each set of semicircles rotated through 180ยบ; and
- The areas inside the smallest semicircles both labelled as area "W", the adjacent half annuli as area "X", the larger half annuli as area "Y" and the remainder of the rectangle as area "Z".
A printable version of this target is available.
Some ideas...
- At which part of the target did members of your group aim when throwing their coins? (Were you aiming just to get the coin onto the page? To land it in a particular section?...). Do you think the same would have been true for all participants? In what ways would you expect this to influence your data and/or the national data?
- Suggest a scoring system for a game played using Target 2 (that is, decide how many points a player will get for landing his or her coin on each section of the target). Try it out - are some strategies more likely to "win" than others?
