Pencil Case Problems

Paul Swan introduced The Pencil Case Problem in his book Maths Investigations. Commonly available pencil cases come with eight slots into which letters may be placed, and a sheet of pre-printed letters to cut out and use - which naturally leads to questions about whether the number of slots and selection of letters are appropriate.
